Want to Be a Star in Children's Ministry? Here's How.

So you want to be a star in children's ministry?

Do you want to lead the way in sharing the Gospel to coming generations?

Do you want to be a great leader for the kids, parents and volunteers in your ministry?

Do you want other ministries to see what is going on in your ministry and become so excited, that they contact you for ideas and insight?

Do you want people to smile when they hear your name because they know God's hand is upon your life and ministry?

Do you want people to see your social media posts and pictures and hit the "like" and "follow" buttons?

Do you want to max out the 5,000 "friends" that Facebook allows.

Okay. Here's how to do it.

Forget about being a star and start focusing on developing other people into stars.

Greatness in ministry is not about being a star. Rather, it's about turning the people around you into stars.

I have always loved this quote since the first time I heard it.

A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves. Lao Tzu

Wow! There's a lot of truth in that quote.

Do you want to know if you are a star yet?

Do this. Step back into the shadows one week and see how the ministry does without you there to lead it outright.

Things run great without you? Nothing misses a beat without you there? If the answer is "yes," then you are on your way to being a star.

Quite often you will meet a leader that has built the ministry around his or her showmanship.

This is evident when you see the "star" leader sharing the lesson each week and not training up other people to be "star teachers and star leaders."

Let's be honest. I think we all struggle with this at times. We want to be loved and followed as a leader and so we make the ministry all about us. Our self-worth gets caught up in wanting people to love and respect us as a leader. And so we do things that elevate our gifts and talents and pushes the leaders around us back into the shadows.

I get it. I think we've all been there at one time or another. When I catch myself wanting to be seen as a "star" children's ministry leader, I must remember that it's not about me. It's about helping other people become a star leader.

According to Jesus, becoming a star is not about how many people serve you. Rather it's about how many people you serve and help grow into better leaders. Look at these verses from the Bible.

Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Matthew 20

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. John 13

Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” Philippians 2

And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10

If you want to be a star in children's ministry, then summit to the higher purpose of God for your life by investing in others.

Use your influence to serve and grow others.

Put others needs before your own.

This is the pathway to becoming a star in children's ministry.

Remember, it's about not how many people like you or your social media

posts. It's about how many people you can impact and grow in to stars.
